West Midlands Police is reminding residents not to take vigilante action in Quinton and Harborne.
West Midlands Police know that some local people are concerned about a rise in break-ins and theft in the area, however, reports of burglary have reduced by 23% in the last year.
Crime rates have been slightly higher during this lockdown compared with the previous two, but there has still been a 30% reduction this month compared with the same period last year.
Unfortunately vigilantism is being encouraged on the Next Door app. West Midlands Police strongly advise against people taking matters into their own hands, as this could result in people suffering serious injuries or worse.
West Midlands Police say that you could also be prosecuted if you are found to have broken the law.
Patrols have been increased in the area in order to discuss concerns and reassure people.
West Midlands Police’s dedicated burglary offensive – named Operation Cantil – uses intelligence-led patrol strategies to ensure officers are in the right place at the right time to target crooks burgling houses and hunting high-value cars.
Traffic units work through the night alongside specialist units, including dog teams, to target areas that have been hit with burglaries plus near the homes of potential suspects. 146 people have been arrested so far this year.
In the local area West Midlands Police have our own teams of officers that work to track offenders and suspects too. They respond to local intelligence, make arrests and manage offenders when they are released from prison.
A spokes person for West Midlands Police said, “We would ask people to take simple crime prevention measures with their homes and cars, such as making sure all doors and windows are locked and making sure valuables, particularly in cars, are removed or hidden from sight.
“It’s also extremely important for people to report crime and suspicious activity to us. If you don’t report it, we can’t take action. Be vigilant – but don’t take matters into your own hands.
“Streetwatch volunteers have been prevented from patrol due to lockdown rules, but we look forward to working in partnership with them as restrictions ease. Find out how to join them here.”
